Big Rock Cafe& Grocery (Mount Vernon, Washington)

The Big Rock Cafe and Grocery, 14779 State Route 9, Mount Vernon, Washington, USA  phone 360-424-7872.  This is truly a great find, very unusual tavern but in a very good way.  They only sell Beer and wine, but I will get back to that.  It is located at the intersection of College Way and Hwy 9 about 5 miles or so east of Interstate 5, Mount Vernon.  This was a gas station and grocery store for many many years.  About 5 months ago it opened as the Big Rock Cafe and Grocery. They have an area for adults only where you must be 21 years or older to sit there.  Thus the Tavern part of this place.  The Tavern area has 3 booths seating 2 people each and 3 booths seating 4 people each.  They have a shuffle board and seating right be side the board.  The other half of the place has booths and seating...never did see any kids in there.  They also have a sit up bar that seats 6 people.,  Now the grocery part of the store surrounds the tavern area and is on one wall and parts of two other walls.  They have 12 different types of beer on tap.  Their wine menu lists the wines by 3 categories, Cheap...Decent....and Good!  They also have live music on the weekends!!  The service was very good and friendly.  The food is very good.  I had the blue cheese burger with homemade potato salad.  Great burger and great potato salad!!  My wife had the same but went with the homemade coleslaw.  You can also get fries as a side.  I have to come here and try their breakfast out one day soon.  There are 5 deer/ elk heads mounted on the wall and 5 flat screen TV'S for watching the game while you eat.  A very cool, rustic clean and fun place.  Well worth your time to go and try it out.
Went here again in May 2013 and still a great place to go! I had the Blue Burger, which was home made with blue cheese.....very, very good. For my side I had the potato salad which was awesome!! My wife had the Lamb stew and a salad and again, awesome! They have these cool tables, which I had to ask about.  They are old wood ship hatches, very cool indeed!  Nice out door covered and uncovered patio area.  This is a must try out place!!
August 2013 back again!  This time I had the Rueben with corned beef, sauerkraut, secret Russian sauce and with their home made potato salad.  Wow, was it ever good! The corned beef was thick and juicy, and the sauerkraut was exceptionally good.  My wife had the Shrimp Louie Salad which is made with fresh bay shrimp, hard boiled eggs, almonds, olives, tomatoes, lettuce and 1,000 Islands dressing.  Everything was very fresh and a big portion.  Once again, a must go to place!!
